AI Giants Offer Useful Contrast in Crisis PR

When tallying winners and losers in a crisis situation, the market usually speaks loudest. Anthropic didn’t pick its fight with the U.S. Department of War over the use of AI technology in the military, but seems to have come out on the plus side. Competitor OpenAI, however, is now suffering a reputational crisis of its own making.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has been forthright in communicating the company’s concerns over potential misuse of its technology, particularly in two areas: mass domestic surveillance, and fully autonomous weapons. That’s consistent with the values of a company that was formed just five years ago by Amodei and his sister, Daniela, both former OpenAI employees, with the goal of creating safer, more ethical Ai tools.
The rest of Silicon Valley showed surprising solidarity in supporting Anthropic at a time when very few business leaders have openly opposed the Trump administration. That includes OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who told CNBC he believed companies should work with the Pentagon provided they comply with the law and “the few red lines” the industry has for AI’s use in the military.
The Department of War responded by designating Anthropic a “supply chain risk,” dramatically limiting the company’s prospects for doing business with other organizations that work with the Pentagon.
Hours later, Altman signed a deal for OpenAI to replace Anthropic, claiming “more guardrails than any previous agreement for classified AI deployments.” And Anthropic sued the Department of War over its “supply chain risk” designation.
Amodei has been lauded broadly for standing up for his company’s beliefs, while Altman has been skewered for doing a 180 on the subject. Moreover, reports suggest numerous organizations are voting with their wallets by migrating from OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform to Anthropic’s Claude.
The lesson here is simple. In the heat of a crisis, stay true to your company’s ethos and the needs of its most important stakeholders. And if you’re on the fringes of a crisis, maybe think twice before you step on the playing field and put yourself in the spotlight.
